A U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer shot and killed a 37-year-old man Friday after he fled when authorities tried to arrest him in Prince William County, police said.
The man, identified as Mario Dantoni Bass, had 11 active warrants, including a domestic-related abduction, felony grand larceny auto, identify theft and traffic violations since September 2015, police said.
A 29-year-old woman from Manassas last week reported to police that after an argument with Bass, he forced her into a vehicle, drove away and, at some point, physically assaulted her, Prince William County police said in a statement Friday. She eventually left the vehicle when it came to a stop and Bass fled the area, the statement said about the Feb. 14 incident that led to an investigation and warrants for Bass¡¯s arrest.
At about 9 a.m. Friday, the U.S. Marshals Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force responded to a Days Inn in the 16000 block of Old Stage Road in Dumfries to serve multiple arrest warrants on Bass, who was believed to be staying in a hotel room, Prince William County police said in a statement.
When the task force attempted to enter the room, Bass ¡°broke through an upper floor window,¡± fled and encountered the ICE officer at the back of the hotel, authorities said in the statement. Police said there was a physical altercation, and the officer shot Bass in the upper body.
Bass died at a hospital, according to the statement, and no one else was injured. Prince William County police remain the lead agency investigating the incident.
The Prince William County shooting comes during a week that also saw Prince George¡¯s County police officer Mujahid Ramz?ziddin shot and killed Feb. 21 while, police said, he was off-duty and trying to aid a female neighbor in a domestic disturbance. The suspect in the officer¡¯s killing, identified as Glenn Tyndell, fled in an SUV and was fatally shot in a confrontation with two police officers who had pursued him.
Ramzziddin was buried Friday.
An Edmonston Police Department officer shot and injured a man Feb. 22 after the man was punching the Maryland officer in the face, making the officer feel as though ¡°he was going unconscious,¡± police said. Edmonston is a small town in Prince George¡¯s County near the District border.
