The MLS season openers are less than two weeks away, but for five teams, serious competition begins this week with the first legs of the CONCACAF Champions League¡¯s round of 16.
In an intra-league skirmish Tuesday, new coach Anthony Hudson and the Colorado Rapids will host MLS Cup champion Toronto FC (10 p.m. ET, univisiondeportes.com), which believes it¡¯s built to end the league¡¯s long CCL drought.
¡°We are as equipped as any MLS team ever to win this competition,¡± TFC President Greg Manning said. ¡°That¡¯s the type of aspirations we have; we don¡¯t want to sit back.¡±
Game-time weather in Commerce City, Colo.: 16 degrees, but it will feel like 10.
On Wednesday, FC Dallas will visit Panama¡¯s Tauro (8 p.m., univisiondeportes.com), while on Thursday, the Seattle Sounders will travel to Salvadoran side Santa Tecla (10 p.m., univisiondeportes.com) and the New York Red Bulls will face Olimpia in a match moved to San Jose, Costa, Rica, because of unrest in Honduras (10 p.m., Univision Deportes, univisiondeportes.com).
The return legs are next week, days before the league openers.

Barcelona has lost once in 38 matches across all competitions since falling in the preseason Spanish Super Cup to Real Madrid: 19 victories and five draws in 24 La Liga games, four victories and two draws in the Champions League and 6-1-1 in Copa del Rey.
On Wednesday, Sevilla will host Manchester United and Roma will visit Shakhtar Donetsk.

The news broke on the Insider¡¯s Twitter page Saturday night, and during a conference call with reporters Monday, Coach Anthony Hudson confirmed the team had struck a deal, pending paperwork and visa approval. An official announcement could come Tuesday. Mason, 26, is the second Wolves player inked by the Rapids; last month, they purchased midfielder Jack Price.
